This opinion piece makes the argument that because of Rwanda’s totalitarian government, the education system in the country by design does not teach the skills necessary to innovate and fix the country’s problems. This further exacerbates existing issues in the country, especially poverty, as the people, by and large, are not given the education needed to create solutions. The lack of quality universities also illustrates the concept that the lower the level of education one has, the higher chance they will become or stay poor.

Academics have argued that standardized assessments are biased based on the sheer question design being written from a privileged vantage point that is incomprehensible to children from socio-economically disadvantaged communities.
