At the dawn of the new millennium, the United Nations (UN) set a goal of eradicating poverty by 2030. Over the past two decades since 2000, humanity has had the capacity to eradicate extreme poverty, endemic hunger and the poverty-related deprivations. Yet poverty-related causes still account for about a third of all human deaths worldwide. Some 800,000 people still live below the bare-bones $1.90 per day international poverty line. The poorest of the poor live wretched lives. At best, they have barely enough money to eat and pay for necessities like clothes and housing. At worst, they starve and suffer from debilitating, but preventable, diseases.

This course focuses on world hunger, its causes, effects and solutions. Through the fourteen weeks of the course, students will learn about different types of hunger and malnutrition in different regions of the world, both in impoverished countries in the global south as well as wealthier nations in the global north.
